The 2024 release of SOLIDWORKS Visualize, has come a brand-new default appearance type – DSPBR appearances.
DSPBR is Dassault Systèmes version of the popular Physically Based Rendered material type.
This is fast becoming the industry standard within visualisation and CGI workflows and is widely used in Dassault Systèmes other rendering solutions, including 3DEXPERIENCE, CATIA, Deltagen, and 3DXCITE.
HOW DO PBR MATERIALS WORK?
The Physical Based Rendering appearances are composed of 5 separate texture maps, with two different variants – one for metallic appearances and another for anything else. If you want the technical term, these are referred to as ‘dielectric’ appearances.
These 5 texture maps are broken down into the base, ambient occlusion, normal map – and depending on whether it is a metallic appearance or not, roughness and metallic or glossiness and specular.
WHAT TYPES OF DSPBR APPEARANCE ARE THERE?
Beyond these 5 texture maps, the DSPBR appearance type supports 13 extra values options that can be altered to get the correct specific appearance.
These fall into the categories of sheen, flakes, clearcoat, emission and volume.
To get started using DSPBR materials, make use of the default library that comes with SOLIDWORKS Visualize 2024.
You can access an updated cloud library of over 430 of these optimised appearances, all separated into functional categories. Each of these can be downloaded individually, or in bulk via a right mouse click.
